Swollen Fingers: Unforseeable Circumstances

Polterguys has been on hold for a week. I know it’s not too visible but my index finger has been swollen at the base of my fingernail and my middle and ring fingers are similarly affected at the pads. I’ve been prescribed meds, and ordered to give them a rest and ice them around the clock.

While I’m sure it was due to my improvised pen grip, I should have been more mindful of how much time I was putting pen to paper. I suppose I could have stopped working by five and have reasonable work hours, but when you’re unemployed and freelancing, work hours seem to be more flexible.

The worst part of this whole affair is the “not-working.” As much as I appreciate having the downtime, I still can’t help but feel all the frustration and disappointment. I know I should be resting my hands but the urge to be productive is something I need to fight constantly. Even typing this post is putting pressure on these fingers so I’ll keep it short.

Being prolific has its price. For instance, a member of the all-female manga artist group CLAMP was recently diagnosed with lumbar compression fracture, a lower back condition arising from sitting constantly in a chair for extended periods of time. Can you imagine how she must feel?

It’s a somber note I leave you with before the holidays. But I hope everyone has a good time with family and friends. See you guys next year!
